I Am Not Mr. Potatohead

Before Christmas, WisPolitics interviewed our campaign manager, Mike Tate. This week they’re running an in-depth interview with Julaine Appling, the executive director of the Family Research Institute of Wisconsin, a leading advocate for the proposed ban on civil unions and marriage.

Julaine ApplingIn the interview, Appling pitches many of the arguments we’ve been hearing from our opponents. For one, she believes that gay and lesbians already have the same civil rights as anyone else in this country. Yes, we’ve heard this argument before: gays and lesbians CAN get married… as long as they marry someone of the opposite sex. Appling and her followers don’t quite take into account that we’re not exactly choosing to be gay. (But, please imagine for a moment what would happen if all gays and lesbians married someone of the opposite sex! Now, that would truly “redefine” marriage.)

Appling goes on to say that same-sex parents are not interested in the child's best interest. She says that in order for children to thrive, they need a mother and a father. She states, “Two women and two men do not comprise the same kind of atmosphere and bring to the child-rearing process what a man and a woman bring. They are not interchangeable parts. They are not Mr. Potatohead.”

In the interview, she also talks about what her organization is doing to pass the amendment, whether or not she believes this amendment will define Wisconsin’s national image, and what she thinks this amendment will mean for civil unions, domestic partnerships, and adoption for lesbian and gay couples in this state.

If I'm not mistaken, Ms. Appling has never been married and does not have children. And she has the gall to lecture other people about marriage and family? Shame on her.

In the matter that Ms. Appling has never been married and doesnt have children significantly shows that she is out of touch with this issue. Identifying gay and lesbian couples as single is running away from the issue. Gay and Lesbian COUPLES are not single and shouldnt be forced to be identified as SINGLE and i want us to shove that in Applings face.
