Rep. Turner, from Racine

Rep. Robert Turner, from Racine, just gave a moving speech about how he left the South, because it wasn’t fair to people like him.

He said he moved to Wisconsin, a progressive state, where he knew he would be treated fairly. And now, he's saddened that Wisconsin is trying to treat same-sex couples unfairly, and losing its progressive credentials.

I would like to thank Rep. Turner.

My family came to America during the war to escape persecution from the Nazis and their supporters. They came here to make a better life for themselves and their families. They came here to be treated with respect and to retain their dignity. They came here for freedom. They gave up their homes, their land, their friends, and their country. They risked everything to make a better life for themselves and their future generations.

It makes me sad to think that all of their hard work and sacrifice may have been in vain. It makes me sad to think that I may have to make the same sacrifices in order to protect my family and to provide a better life for my family. It makes me sad to think that my wife and I may have to give up our home, our jobs, our friends, our beautiful city, and the country that I was taught was the "Land of Opportunity" ... just so that our family can have the rights that my grandparents and great-grandparents wanted for their children and grandchildren.
