Students Thank Underheim for Opposing Ban

A story in today's Advance Titan, the UW-Oshkosh student paper, covers a group of students who presented Representative Gregg Underheim (R-Oshkosh) with a formal thank you for his no vote on the ban.

Underheim played down the attention, noting in particular that Republican support for gay rights isn't that unusual. He "mentioned the personal connection Republicans like Dick Cheney and Rudolph Giuliani have to this issue."

He also seemed to take note of recent activity in the local blogosphere (do I get kicked off the island if I refuse to use that phrase, cheddarsphere?): "Through the use of blogging and other alternative media outlets, Underheim believes the public’s perception can be altered before voting."

Underheim further predicts the ban's downfall, noting that the second sentence especially is too extreme for the average Wisconsin voter.

The remainder of the article describes the good work done by some mighty dedicated students at the UW-Oshkosh, and it's well worth reading in full.

UW-Madison's Badger Herald also profiles Representative Underheim and his opposition to the civil unions and marriage ban. You can read the article here.

This is worth reading. It highlights, for me, the importance younger people can play in this debate. If this ban is passes, it will need to be undone by them because the world is a changing. So why not engage them now! I encourage everyone to engage a younger person now... maybe you can help encourage some passion for the cause.

Great advice. Thanks Tom.

You may also recall the post "Younger People Back Equality" about a poll that showed three in four high school seniors opposing a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage.
