Senator Russ Feingold Takes a Strong Stand

Senator Russ Feingold issued a strong statement today against the civil unions and marriage ban. He has been talking about the issue at his listening sessions around the state.
“The proposed ban on civil unions and marriage is a mean-spirited attempt to divide Wisconsin and I indicated that it should be defeated,” Feingold said. “It discriminates against thousands of people in our communities--our co-workers, our neighbors, our friends, and our family members. It would single out members of a particular group and forever deny them rights and protections granted to all other Wisconsin citizens. It would also outlaw civil unions and jeopardize many legal protections for all unmarried couples, whether of the same or the opposite sex. We shouldn’t enshrine this prejudice in our state’s Constitution.”
In the statement, Senator Feingold also says he believes gay couples should have the right to marry and "have access to the same rights, privileges and benefits that straight couples currently enjoy.”

As Wisconsinites wrestle with what the civil unions and marriage ban means for families in their communities, we thank Senator Feingold for taking a stand.

I want to see Tommy Thompson make a similar statement. Those who know him know that he feels the same way and is quite distressed by the bickering going on back here. It would show clearly that this is not a partisan issue.

Unfortunately, Matt Foreman, executive director for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, issued a terribly partisan statement of support for Fiengold. HRC's was a bit more balanced. I hope that Action Wisconsin's response is balanced, too.

Any chance we can get Thompson to make an appearence? Maybe on the same stage as Russ?

If I were Tommy (or any other politician), I would want to know that my supporters are against the ban, and why. So if you're a Republican and want Tommy to speak out against the ban (especially if you've given money to his campaigns or other Republican campaigns) you should work within those networks to build and show support for Republicans who may want to speak out against the ban.

Go, Russ, Go! I love this state, and I know we can pull this off. But, man, it's sure nice to have a respected and principled leader on our side. But yeah, if only Kohl and Ed Thompson's brother --what's his name again? -- would step up and take a principled stand. We're on the right side of history, folks.

I think Matt Foreman was just trying to show the Feingold is no wuss and will take a courageous stand when it matters.
