This is What Momentum Looks Like

In the campaign to defeat the ban, remarkable things continue to happen.

On Sunday, a State Journal columnist said Libertarian Party leader Ed Thompson’s opposition to the ban is a sure sign that we can win. Recent polls suggest decreasing support for the ban. And two weeks ago, Senator Feingold called the civil unions and marriage ban “a mean-spirited attempt to divide Wisconsin.”

All of this is good news, but to win in November, we still have a mountain to climb. The same polls that show dropping support for the civil unions and marriage ban, show us behind overall.

Thousands of Wisconsinites don’t yet know about the far-reaching consequences of the ban or the effects it will have on families all over the state. That’s why we’re launching extensive door-to-door canvassing efforts in 13 cities.

Before you knock on your first door, we will help you learn how to talk with voters and will pair you with a partner to work with. And throughout the day, you’ll feel the immediate effects of your work: changed minds.

We will win in November. But to do so, we need to have thousands of face-to-face conversations in the next 203 days.

Keep the momentum going as we fan out across the state. This Saturday we will canvass in Madison, Milwaukee, Oshkosh, Platteville, Dogeville, Eau Claire, La Crosse, Superior, and River Falls. And next Saturday, join us in Kenosha, Green Bay, Appleton, and Stevens Point.

Register and get more information on the canvasses here.

Those recent polls should tell us a couple things: 1) we MUST make it ABSOLUTELY clear that this ban goes way beyond gay marriage and would permanently outlaw even civil unions, and 2) if the majority of Wisconsin voters are aware of that, they will vote against it -- but ONLY if they are aware of that. So let's repeat it over and over again until it becomes second-nature to anyone we speak with on the street.

The poll indicates that a strong majority of those surveyed support civil unions. So we need to tell EVERYONE that the proposed ban would destroy any chance for that. THEN the ban will absolutely be defeated on November 7.
