House Defeats Marriage Ban

In a 236-187 vote, the U.S. House just defeated the federal ban on marriage for gay couples. To pass it required a two-thirds majority. You can see the complete roll call online, but here are how the Wisconsin representatives voted:

YEA
Rep. James Sensenbrenner
Rep. Mark Green
Rep. Paul Ryan
Rep. Tom Petri

NAY
Rep. Tammy Baldwin
Rep. Gwen Moore
Rep. Dave Obey

Rep. Ron Kind abstained from voting.

If you're not sure who your representative is, you can look it up here. I encourage you all to take a moment to contact your representative to let them know how you feel about their vote. (Just click on their name above to get to their contact page.)

UPDATE: Watch Rep. Tammy Baldwin's floor speech from today's debate at Page One Q.

CORRECTION: Rep. Kind didn't abstain from the vote. The Journal Sentinel reported that Kind, who is on record as being against the ban, missed the vote due to illness. On Monday, Kind sent a letter to his colleagues asking them to vote "No."
