Retired Bishop for a Fair Wisconsin
Donald Ott is a retired Methodist Bishop who currently resides in Pewaukee. He recently sat down to tell us why he's working to defeat the ban.
Why are you voting no on the civil unions and marriage ban?
The matter which has been put before voters is a limitation on rights and is not one which should be in the Constitution. Contrary to this proposed language, I affirm the rights of individuals to select relationships without discrimination on race, gender and orientation.
Why do you care about this issue?
Because of my fundamental commitments to justice, equality and the expansion of rights; and, valuing Christian spiritual commitments which extol the diversity of creation and covenant making and keeping in relationships.
What is one thing that you think most people don't understand about the ban?
The ways in which the electorate is being manipulated in this matter by power and control-seeking persons who desire restrictions on all but their own limited cultural understandings and expressions.
Tell us about where you are from.
I am a Wisconsin born resident (for all but a decade of my life), a current resident of Pewaukee, with children, grandchildren, family and friends throughout the state.
What do you enjoy most about living in Wisconsin?
The rich, progressive, community enhancing political, religious and cultural history of the state which I seek to recover and advance.
